Path to attaining net carbon neutrality

COP21 was a landmark event in the fight against climate change as all 196 countries at the UN signed the international treaty on climate change mitigation, commonly known as Paris accord. The primary aim is to keep the rise in mean global temperature to below 2° C and preferably to 1.5° C. In order to achieve this target, the pathway defined in COP26 was to aim for 50-55% reduction in GtCO2eq (vs 2010 base) and Net Zero emissions by 2050.

The general agreement among the climate experts and the business community is that the pathway to Net Zero will have 2 phases:

  • Upto 2030: When incremental improvement using current technologies will lead to moderate reduction in CO2 emissions but that will not be enough. In this case carbon offsetting through net carbon negative projects will play a key role in reaching the 50-55% emission reduction target.
  • From 2030-50: When breakthrough technologies like carbon capture and storage, as well as net zero industrial products will reach required scale and will be economical for mass adoption in the private sector. This will drive the net zero pathway.
